I use this in my red-blue deck.
Play jin-gitaxias, niv-mizzet, and reliquary tower. jin\'s ability allows you to draw seven cards during your end step, and those cards drawn make niv deal 7 damage as you choose to (a) creature(s) or player(s). Reliquary tower prevents you from having to discard from all those cards drawn

EDIT: laboratory maniac can also assist, along with epic experiment (which is just to cycle through your cards faster, considering jin is cost 10 to cast)

Yeah, I also can't get past the giant, massive price tag, in a colour set not designed to pump mana.

A good combo should be cheap, quick, and efficient.
