If I understand this right, it's one mana per source to prevent damage from creatures (combat or abilities). Still a useful combo, though, and very easy to work with.

It also prevents damage from Black spells, but not spells of any other color.

...which is important because Darkest Night only targets creatures. (Sorry, Turbine, You hit the nail on the head, but didn't finish the sentence. ^^)

Using a color-splash card to take advantage of COPs/ROPs/ect isn't an awful idea, though. Consider attaching a Painter's Servant to an Infinite Enters Battlefield combo - Painter's Servant, unlike Darkest Night targets *everything*.
