You could still win while having something like Story Circle.  Just to make sure that you can prevent someone from trying to foil your plans of a win.

You could get an extra turn after this one and win the game that way ... probably more likely you won't lose that way.

A new variation on this combo is available, thanks to the Vizkopa Confessor. Near-Death + Vizkopa also has the added advantage of being able to cherry pick an inconvenient card from their hand, to prevent, say, pesky zot spells. :D
