Basically cast leveler on and let your opponents gather specimens resolve so they get leveler

It won't work. Both you and your opponent will have a Gather Specimens, with the overall effect that you get your own creatures anyway.

In a 3 or more player game it's a bit different, but it can still be stacked so you get the Leveler.

Even if you both get a Leveler, you will pass the turn, they won't be able to draw, and you will win. My only problem is that you need 8UUU to pull this off...

Not quite right there - Gather Specimens works on any form of putting creatures into play. E.g. if someone plays Tooth and Nail or uses Elvish Piper, you can use Gather Specimens to steal what they try and put into play. The problem is that you don't get to know what they would put into play until the ability resolves (plus I think they have a 'may' effect)

Also, Gather Specimens isn't a triggered effect, it sets up a replacement ability.

In a two player game when both people have a Gather effect, each player gets their own creatures because BOTH replacement effects are applied - first the one which gives control to our opponent, then the one which gives it back to you.

In 3 or more player games, any player can end up with the creature. This is where it gets confusing.

Example, 3 players each of whom has a Gather (due to Hive Mind)

Player A casts a creature spell. When it tries to come into play, Gather's replacement effects kick in. At this point there are two replacement effects for A to choose from - put it into play under B or C's control. B is chosen.

Since the creature would be coming into an opponent's control, Player A's replacement ability kicks in. Player B now has to choose between Player A and Player C's ability. In this case, he chooses Player A.

Finally, there is only one Gather replacement ability to kick in (A and B cannot be applied again) to the creature ends up under C's control.

From Gatherer:

If two or more players have each cast Gather Specimens during the same turn and a creature would enter the battlefield, the creature's would-be controller (the controller of the creature spell, for example) chooses one of the applicable Gather Specimens to apply. Then the new would-be controller of the creature repeats this process among the remaining Gather Specimens, and so on, until there are no more possible Gather Specimens effects to apply.

I didn't realize Gather is a Replacement effect for some reason I was thinking it was a delayed triggered, thanks for clearing it up Zark
