Start the game with Leyline of Lightning in play. On your first turn, play a Sol Ring, then tap 1 to deal one damage to target player.

I am not sure if this will work.

it's not when you sucessfully cast a spell it's when you play it, so you would need to pay the ( 1 ) before the sol ring is actually in play.

Man Turbine, you are really out of it.  And I'm the one 12 hours behind on sleep (I think at some point this must undo itself because I don't feel tired)  Yes I have been counting the hours of sleep I get under 8 comparing it to 3 times each hour over 8 and it adds up to 12 since the last time I was fully caught up.  How the HELL am I awake right now?

You could do this if the land you play before the Sol Ring is City of Traitors.

Or you replace the Sol Ring with any 0 cost card (a Mox, Ornithopter, Kobold, whatever) so long as you play a land first.

Or even if you're going second and have a Gemstone Caverns in hand.
