It's just a way to get the creature out sooner. Having it out early makes it harder for an opponent to deal with, giving you an early advantage.
There isn't really a combo here, just getting mana to play a creature, and there are no cards that interact.

Besides the fact that this isn't a combo - it's also very easy to deal with...

Diabolic edict, swords to plowshares, balance, what's that anti-elf creature destruction...eyeblights ending or something...ya....there's many ways to kill this guy before he gets you.

Every deck should have SOME fast creature removal in it - that or some really fast defense.

yes, even though The demon has a very nasty landfall ability, most of the decks I've build would be able to remove him with ease. I live by exile/removal spells in almost anything I play and that is one creature I would not hesitate to play journey to nowhere on, lol.
