Hive Mind out makes each of your opponents get a wurm so you get to play stuff, but on their stuff you cast gather specimens

Huh? Hive Mind only triggers if an instant or sorcery is played, not creature spell...

I was thinking of posting Tempting Wurm and Gather Specimens but decided that 8 mana was too high of a cost.

Tempting Wurm plus Gather Specimens does not work as well as you think.

Firstly, the ability on the Wurm is a triggered ability and goes on the stack.

Your opponents will put stuff into play during the resolution of that ability.

You cannot play other spells or abilities during the resolution of an ability, unless the ability itself allows you to (e.g. Chandra Ablaze's ultimate ability) - therefore you have to play the Gather Specimens in response to the triggered ability so it resolves first.

However, because the ability states your opponents MAY put creatures etc. into play, they will simply choose not to put creatures into play. (unless they have Phage or Leveller!)

So pretty much you have paid 8 mana for a 5/5.

Zark is right. Because of the timing with the stack, you wont accomplish anything with this combo unless your opponents feel like giving their creatures to you.

Not to mention, even if this combo worked, the Hive Mind would give your opponents copies of Gather Specimens, so they would get anything YOU brought into play...

You got fucked 2wice on this one :)

if gather is played with hive mind in play the copies will resolve first, when the orignal resolves it will overwrite the copies and you would get control of everything that came into play

Actually, each Gather Specimens sets up a replacement effect until end of turn.

Things get messy when figuring out the order replacement effects happen in. It's not too bad for two player games, but more than that and things get weird.

From the rulings on Gatherer - http://gatherer.wizards.com/Pages/Card/Details.aspx?multiverseid=175011

If two or more players have each cast Gather Specimens during the same turn and a creature would enter the battlefield, the creature's would-be controller (the controller of the creature spell, for example) chooses one of the applicable Gather Specimens to apply. Then the new would-be controller of the creature repeats this process among the remaining Gather Specimens, and so on, until there are no more possible Gather Specimens effects to apply.

The above procedure means that if two opposing players have each cast Gather Specimens during the same turn and a creature would enter the battlefield under the control of one of them, it really will enter the battlefield under that player's control. (The creature would enter the battlefield under player A's control, so player B's Gather Specimens affects it. Now that creature would enter the battlefield under player B's control, so player A's Gather Specimens affects it. Each replacement effect has now been used, so the creature will enter the battlefield under player A's control.)
