2/1/2014: To choose a pile at random, each pile must have an equal chance of being chosen. There are many ways to do this, including assigning each pile a number and rolling a die.
The trick is to create a mechanism for three equal chances by flipping coins.
So use two coin Flips representing a two bit binary number. flip two times assigning bit 0 and bit 1 value.
So you have two chances by the thumb to get a positive result!-)

Fairly certain Krark's only affects coin flips that are required by cards.
You could after also put a mark on the underside of a clover leaf have the player deciding a pile pull a leaf, after all. Arbitrarily chosen methods of deciding things are generally outside the rule of the game.

Comprehensive rule 705.3 allows to substitute flipping a coin by other methods of randomization, why not doing so vice versa?

That rule essentially lays down the exact rules for flipping a coin, and what can be substituted for flipping the coin if you don't have one handy.
I also checked with a live judge chat, and they confirm the Thumb only looks at cards that call for coin flips, not flipping coins to make decisions at random.
