Exile Render silent with Elite Arcanist. With training grounds in play, all you have to pay is 1 colorless mana. Eventually add something to untap the arcanist like Freed from the real, in order to play its ability every turn with only 2 mana.

Why not Silence?

Render silent and Silence are a bit different, because the first is also a counterspell.
In addition, I wanted to emphasize the synergy with Training grounds. It allows you to play instants for 2 less mana and I think it should work also with overload costs, etc.

Unfortunately, you can't overload spells copied that way. "Without paying its mana cost" is an alternate mana cost, as is overload, and you can only pay ONE of them, and the ability creating the copy says which one.

Can't I play a spell only for its overload cost? It is not an additional cost like Kicker costs, for example.

your not paying X to cast the spell, your paying to activate the ability.

Its the abilities resolution that lets you cast. and the ability decided what alternate cost was paid, you never have an option to choose.

But if you cast Silence at the beginning of their untap step then you won't need to wait to counter anything ;). But it is cool that Training Grounds reduces the cost of activating Elite Arcanist.

Also I grabbed this from Gatherer:

4/15/2013: If you are instructed to cast a spell with overload “without paying its mana cost,” you can't choose to pay its overload cost instead.

So Overload is a no-go.

Thank you guys for the explanation. There's always something new to discover! (unfortunately in this case)
