Just a fun little trick I noticed a while back. Devour costs are paid as a creature enters (that handy little hidden step between the stack and the battlefield, when cards like clone get their form chosen), so the dragon is still not on the field when its fed.
Once it is fed, if it ate the thrall, it spits it right back out for you. Its a zombie, it probably tastes horrible anyway.
