show and tell is a may ability.
if you want to use gather to get your opponents creatures, use mill to fill their graves then cast gather and living death

They also don't have to put out a creature with it. Any card of any of the listed types is fair game for Show and Tell, so you could be paying an extra pile of mana to give them another land drop.
