Koth of the Hammer is standing in for Purphoros, God of the Forge.

Lightning bolt can be any damage-dealing spell that can hit your opponent.

In this case, the Lightning Bolt will try to deal its 3 damage. Hostility will prevent it, and give you three 3/1 elemental tokens. Purphoros will see those new tokens, and shoot each of your opponents for 2 damage per token, for a total of 6 damage. Then you attack with your new tokens, for a potential output of 15 damage for casting a Lightning Bolt.

Add burn at the stake to finish them off potentially after the lightning bolt, but don't swing yet. Instead, tap down your 5 creatures, prevent the 15 damage, get all 15 3/1's out, and deal 75 damage instead. Might as well go all out at that point anyways

Curse of Bloodletting would be much better. Double the damage that Hostility prevents to get double the tokens, Purphoros shoots for 4 damage per token, and the tokens themselves swing for 6 damage each.

Turn the lightning bolt into 60 damage.

If you really want to crank it up some more, that is.

And of course, with Burn at the Stake, tapping the two creatures and 6 tokens for a total of 48 damage, for 48 tokens. 480 damage anyone?

Why not just furnace of wrath, then?

Furnace just encourages things to go wrong, I think. It doubles ALL damage, including what you and your creatures (the important ones) take. I've personally had a couple games where playing out a Furnace of Rath cost me the game because my opponent was able to capitalize on it on their next turn.

Curse of Bloodletting doesn't have that threat, as it only doubles damage THEY take.
