Island is fathom mage. Pay x mana, draw x+1 cards, and let it evolve. Not too cheap, but still a combo

Do that work? Doesn't it enter with the counters on it, instead of entering then putting counters on it?

doesnt work, as the conclave is errata to say "Forestwalk
As an additional cost to cast creature spells, you may pay any amount of mana. If you do, that creature enters the battlefield with that many additional +1/+1 counters on it."

though... i'd rather it work... so i could abuse the mechanic... but it doesnt, however, Mikaeus, the Lunarch works well with the fathom mage

It does work. Master Biomancer has the same wording, for its ability, and that works. The counters are not put on the creature until it is on the battlefield (nothing but Skullbriar can have them anywhere else), at which point the creature sees counters being put on it and responds.
