Forest = Thragtusk

Throw thragtusk on mimic vat and enjoy the life/creature each turn.

This isn't bad, but you could achieve a similar effect for much cheaper by just flickering Thragtusk by Conjurer's CLoset if you wanted to keep it artifact heavy, but there's other cards to do it too. While we're looking at non-standard options (modern, I suppose?), Flickerform may be to your liking.

The point of the combo is to use it as a form of defense in addition to offense.

Flickerform is nice, but you have to rely on a new color and you get the creature at the end of turn (taking damage away from the opposing creature and possibly killing the creature). It also costs addition mana to activate from mimic vat.

Conjurer's is nice and cheaper, but it wouldn't work for "flashing" the creature in for defense/offense.
