(Island = Axebane guardian)

Then again, it might just be standard is not a combo-inducive format, but that\'s arguable.

It's not that standard isn't good for standards, its just that with the high level of power that exists in single cards alone (look at Thragtusk. Like, what the hell), all a deck needs is powerful synergy to work. The best standard decks have always been ones that offer a good amount of flexibility, and combo decks usually have to sacrifice flexibility. Also, if a combo is disrupted is can shoot down the whole deck - meaning that if you manage to pull it off game 1, you can bet you're going to face a tough sideboard for games 2 and 3.

The only traditional "combo" I've seen in standard (Frankly, I consider Killing wave+Blood Artist just to be very good synergy) that does any good is the RUG Soulbond deck that floats around, capitalizing on Deadeye Navigator+Zealous Conscripts+Gilded Lotus for infinite mana and permanent theft. It also uses very synergistic cards like Deadeye+Snapcaster Mage, and Izzet Staticaster+Nightshade Peddler. Combo decks are certainly fun, but there's a reason the top decks in Standard aren't combo decks.

There is infinite mana with just commons in standard. Good job there.
