I'm sure most of you have seen this but I've been using it since New Phyrexia (without the artful dodge)and it works. Target the souleater with artful dodge, attack and target it with tainted strike. pay enough life to kill and whamo.

Yeah but with tainted strike, at least you have 4 life. (gives it +1/+0)

I think he means the creature can be killed by a Lightning Bolt. When you cast your unblockable card, its a sorcery, and then when you pay the life, and then tainted strike...and smart player would wait til you did all of that and then lightning bolt (or any instant that destroys a creature, or deals 1 damage, or gives -1 toughness) your creature, and you are left with 4 life, no creature, and your combo is in the graveyard.
