1998? What are you talking about, the Urza elves? Yes, green was all like "let's give players a ___ton of mana!" That is great and all if you are playing things that are expensive. If you are playing straight up elves back then, you can't count Marhault Elsdragon, as he was still a "Legend". Elvish Riders were almost not riders, but that wasn't quite yet. Thus it was a two way tie with Elvish Bard (which would be replaced by Taunting Elf, CMC=1, the following year) and the new-at-the-time-but-had-echo Deranged Hermit with their CMC=5.

Elves weren't expensive back then. Since I rid my sideboard of desert twisters (there are cheaper avenues) the most expensive card I run in my elf deck is Ambush Commander with its CMC of 5.
Point being, Elves kicked butt and took names in Onslaught block and haven't been the same since. Yes Joraga Warcaller is a good card, if your deck resounds mana. My elf deck doesn't need that because it runs on Llanowar elves, Seekers of Skybreak, and Timberwatch elves(with a couple Coats of Arms).

Elves were so 2005.

Wow, you really dove into that one, huh? lol  Actually, I was simply pulling a random date out of my head to reflect a joke.  But all joking aside, elves and goblins are just redundant now, and honestly, to the point that I'm still forced to consider both when I build decks. I will not build a deck that doesn't include some form of mass creature removal, a hard lesson learned from years of playing against elves/goblins. And through it all I've never built a personal elf or goblin deck of my own.......ever.

Elf, blah blah blah, elf, elf, blah blah, elf.....
Goblin, blah , goblin blah blah, goblin, blah......

Lol, that was even funny to watch myself type.....
