Prevent the damage with Shield, then on your upkeep return the shield so you don\'t lose the life from it\'s trigger.

This could be uber nasty if you through in Leonin Abuntas (I think that's it's name, it's the kitty that gives artifacts shroud.)

Umbilicus says Pay Life, not deal damage.

it does work, nicely actually, you use the shield to prevent damage from the opponent. and during the upkeep put the shield on the stack first so umbilcus resolves first, don't pay the 2 life and return the shield to hand removing the delay counters, the shields trigger then resolves but there's nothing to remove so it fizzles.  Recast the shield during your turn.

Yeah it's not about preventing the 2 life payed from the bouncer artifact... It's about preventing all of the damamge that your opponents are hitting you with for 2 life and 4 mana.
