wasn't super expensive back in 1993...
i started in alpha, but didnt think of this combo till beta
black lotus was not rare when it was printed, but became rare after many got destroyed, as the original rules stated that if a card was destroyed, you literally destroyed the card (rip, burn etc...) this was before MTG became a non-ante game (it was a form of gambling before... play for cards decks, or better yet... collections)

because black lotus wasn't nearly what is is now for price, i recall black lotus was valued at only $0.50 when i got some (like all uncommons)... they weren't considered great at the time compared to big creatures that flattened opponents in 2-3 turns

mox emerald was worth i think $5 at the time... and it was one of the most expensive cards out there

total combo cost in the day was roughly $8

the rest of the deck was channel, llanowar elf and cockatrice

deck was this...

4x cockatrice
4x thicket basilisk
4x black lotus
4x mox emerald
4x llanowar elf
4x lure
4x regeration

28 non lands, 12 forest for a 40 card deck (recall that back then, it was a minimum of 40 card deck, and nothing was restricted)

Sounds like you guys had a misunderstanding of the rules from back then.  This is from the rulebook that was sent with Alpha:

"When a card is destroyed or discarded, it is placed into the graveyard. If a spell is countered as it is being cast, it, too, goes into the graveyard, without ever having its effect. Occasionally, a card will be removed from the game entirely. In this case, it is set aside until the next game."

The original rulebook can be found at Wizards

I can just imagine someone desperately trying to tape together a Black Lotus, then bursting out into tears. XD

Or back in the day when you'd trade a playset of Lotus's for 1 Shiven Dragon because the Lotus went for $20 and the Lotus for $5 because it was restricted.  I'd make that trade aaaaaaaaaall day today.  If only I had a time machine...

i've never even seen a black lotus in real life, much less traded a shivan dragon for four of them.

they're probably worth money now, like everything else in alpha or beta.

no idea... but i know i burned more than 30 of them... for lighting the woodstove at a friends... did u know that if you burn crap cards.. and look at the flame... it will burn funky colors? (asdly that is a way to tell a counterfeit from real)
