As long as you have four mana, your opponent will think twice before playing spells on your turn.

sorry no dice  the spell is already cast before you can change its color

you can use painters servant to make them blue before they are cast or use alter reality or another text changer to change seedtime to the color being played

Seedtime says play, not cast. Cast means it just has to make it to the stack, play means it has to successfully resolve.

At least that is how it used to work. I hope M12 hasn't changed that up.

Edit: Well, they changed Seedtime to say cast, but in the errata they said that the blue spell only had to be announced, and didn't even have to resolve...so... That means you are right, gericault5.
Sorry guys, My errata fail.

Cast (/play) just means that the mana is payed for the spell and it is put on the stack, it doesnt need to resolve! But yeah, this doesnt work! Props for using urza though!

I think they should change the rules to the following:

Playing - The time between a permanent materializing (meaning its mana has been paid, but not the expenses in the card text) and becoming a permanent on the field or effects have totally resolved. So if you countered the spell any "playing" effects don't resolve.

Cast - The time when mana is transferred from your mana pool into a card in hand 'til the moment it becomes permanent. In the case of cards that have text cost if you are paying the text cost then the spell is considered permanent and uncountable and was played.

lol, and you're saying the rules aren't currently overcomplicated?

If you've noticed, we have one guy that's a rules guy on here because none of us can keep up with it! lol

Thats because nobody reads the basic rules, and then they complain that the rules are overcomplicated!

I thought that was how casting and playing used to be, but apparently they simplified it. Damn them simplifying and getting rid of mana burn. Do they realize how many cards they made useless and how powerful they made other cards because of them wishing for simplicity.

I don't remember a time when playing and casting were different. . .

Getting rid of mana burn was to make it easier for new players. Taking the stack out of combat really bothered me though.

Wizards has no idea what they're doing. They're just doing it to sell more cards, which is why games have house rules because we all go, "you did what?"

They seem to have a pretty good idea of what they're doing with Magic, at least.
