One colorless mana to destroy one land.

You might as well replace Coating with Mycosynth Lattice so you can destroy more than 1land a turn.

The problem with mycosynth is that you can't get it out til turn 7 assuming one land drop per turn, but with this you can start doing this turn 3. Getting repetitive land destruction out early is far better for slowing an opponent down. By turn 7, you could be facing too many threats, and give your opponent too much of a chance to take you out or respond.

Not with proper mama ramp.

Gotta agree here! If youre playing a good amount of ramp, you should get it out turn 4/5!

Mycosynth works as a long-term strategy, but for land-destruction you want to blow up lands ASAP. This combo let's you hit just as quickly as a Stone Rain, and it's repeatable. It's also much cheaper than the lattice money-wise, and it doesn't have as much a chance of backfiring (mycosynth turns any of their shatter-effects into permanent-destroyers too).

I'm actually not a big fan of land destruction in practice, but I couldn't help but post this combo. I ran a Liquimetal Coating deck for a while, and it's mad-fun turning opponents' planeswalkers into artifacts and then summoning a Manic Vandal to smash them in the face.

I like this combo, it IS easier to get out then the lattice, but after a while it is better to trade off the coat for the lattice, nice one though!

Even though the Lattice does allow for mass-land destruction, I still prefer the cheaper options. Being able to start blowing up lands by turn 3 is huge at being able to completely destroy your opponent's momentum to the point of not ever being able to recover (and that is the point of LD after all). Plus, maybe I just have bad luck, but I have a hard time relying on anything with a CMC of 6 for combos, ramp or not.

Another option besides mycosynth and liquimetal coating is Myr Landshaper. I knew there had to be some use for that guy...

Well with proper mana ramp, you could have this going off on turn two easily. I'm with bebop, you need to get this off fast, that'll provide the most devastation. They can only play on land per turn, if you can destroy one land a turn on turn 2 and go first, they'll never have more than one land out. I'd take this over mycosynth

I love this and I am seriously considering using it!
