And this doesnt work as basalt monolith's tap ability is a mana ability and the rings say if it isnt a mana ability

Youre copying the untap ability, not the tap!

It does work, it just has a crapload of totally unnecessary cards! Its just a basalt monolith+rings combo with random crap thrown in!

Yes, you tap it for 3, then pay 3 to untap, copy the untap with rings, 2 untap abilities on the stack! 1st one resolves, untaps, tap it for mana, 2nd resolves, untap it, tap it again for 3! You need 5 mana to initiate it, but after that its infinite!

I would of thought there would be timing issues with that

Nope, because you have the 2 triggers on the stack, so you just tap after the 1st resolves and before the second!

This does not work. You have to play Exsanguinate by the Hellcarver's ability. At that time you do not have the infinite mana for the x costs which is generated after all spells put on the stack resolved and the Basalt - Brighthearth Synergy is on the battlefield.

  • 6/15/2010: You cast nonland cards from exile as part of the resolution of Hellcarver Demon's ability. You may cast those cards in any order. Timing restrictions based on the card's type (such as creature or sorcery) are ignored. Other restrictions are not (such as "Cast [this card] only before the combat damage step"). You cast all of the cards you like, putting them onto the stack, then Hellcarver Demon's ability finishes resolving. The spells you cast this way will then resolve as normal, one at a time, in the opposite order that they were put on the stack.
  • 6/15/2010: If you cast a card "without paying its mana cost," you can't pay any alternative costs. On the other hand, if the card has optional additional costs (such as kicker or multikicker), you may pay those when you cast the card. If the card has mandatory additional costs (such as Momentous Fall does), you must pay those when you cast the card.

Why have all these other cards when you already have infinite mana? Just use Fireball or something.

As part of Hellcarver effect you discard your hand. You need a draw or scry spell or a fireball on top of the lib.

The Chromatic sphere then let you draw the fireball and provide the {R} for starting the fire.

The only reason this does not work is because of exsanguinate and not for the reason given above as the infinate mana is available. The problem is whenever a x-spell is cast without paying its mana x is always 0. Since loss being done is based on x the loss is 0
The way to correct this is to find a spell which allows you to pay x as an additional cost rather then as a mana cost
Other options are coloerless pestilance type things or c0nvert to black. You can also use something like spawnsire and blasting station or the like. Dark rit is unneeded

@gericault5: I agree that x==0. I disagree in two other points. You are two times wrong.
    A) The infinite mana when casting exsanguinate is not available and also B) you won't be able to pay infinite optional mana because of:

116.1b A player may activate an activated ability any time he or she has priority.
116.1d A player may activate a mana ability whenever he or she has priority, whenever he or she is casting a spell or activating an ability that requires a mana payment, or whenever a rule or effect asks for a mana payment (even in the middle of casting or resolving a spell or activating or resolving an ability).
116.3b The active player receives priority after a spell or ability (other than a mana ability) resolves.
608.2f If an effect gives a player the option to pay mana, he or she may activate mana abilities before taking that action. If an effect specifically instructs or allows a player to cast a spell during resolution, he or she does so by putting that spell on top of the stack, then continuing to cast it by following the steps in rules 601.2a-h, except no player receives priority after it's cast. The currently resolving spell or ability then continues to resolve, which may include casting other spells this way. No other spells can normally be cast and no other abilities can normally be activated during resolution.

Rule 608.2f seems to be designed for Hellcarver Demon!-))) In simple words: During the resolving of Hellcarver Demon's effect,
    - you are not allowed to tap the Basalt Monolith and
    - you are not allowed to activate the Basalt Monolith untap ability and
    - you are not allowed to avtivate the Ring's copy ability.
Therefore there is no mana by Basalt Monolith available when casting exsanguinate (No mana available Point A)).
The only possible scenario in which you are allowed to tap Basalt Monolith is 608.2f (payment of optional mana), this e. g. are kicker, buyback, multikicker...But, this is only 3 colorless mana; you do not have priority and are not allowed to activate the Basalt untap activity and copy it... Point B) gericault5: kicker x or similar won't work, too!

And yes, after resolving all spells you have priority and infinite colorless mana, but at that point the exsanguinate has been already played with x==0.

    @Knarf

your right, don't know what I was think, got myself confused with the timing of the resolution.  I gotta stop going online before my coffee

guess you gotta stick with the other options

Dear gericault5; I hope the coffee was good!-)

yes, the other option is nice:

Doom for the Hellcarver Demon,  Juju Bubble, Basalt Monolith, Rings of Brighthearth and Reckless Assault.

Attack with the Demon, have at least 2 generic mana in your pool during combat step, damage opponent with Demon, play the 4 cards in the order listed above and let them resolve; activate the Rings (still in combat step, 2 mana from your pool) and Monolith for plenty of mana, make you lots of life point with the bubble, then go for reckless damaging the opponent.
This combo would have the disadvantage that you have to resolve the Demons effect since you need priority for the life gain and damage...Also your opponent would have priority in between and may cast Angel's Grace...
