Both are in play.

Spend {B} on crypt rats. Add X +1/+1 counters to crypt rats, where X is the number of creatures in play.

What's the ruling on crypt rats? does the damage resolve simultaneously, destroying the crypt rats with 1 damage AS it gains X +1/+1 counters? Or do the counters save it?

Either way, if you give crypt rats pro black, pro creatures, or pro color-of-choice (as enchantment or 'til end of turn), you won't have to worry about it. Pro black is handy in any deck featuring crypt rats.

It would first deal damage, then in response it would add the counters. Since the creature's toughness had already gone below 0 though, it would die.

This is what I think.

Yup, damage first before counters... So you might need to pump the crypt rats and Mephidross first...

But the wording states that it gains the counters when it deals damage, not when damage resolves

except with the m10 rules change, damage is dealt and resolves at the same time, damage no longer uses the stack.

nice combo by the way, if you are looking for pro cards, it means you'll probally splice in white, inwhich case look at light of sanction it will protect all your creatures from the crypt and with it you can always add the death pits of rath

ahhh, but the cards are also all mtgclassic cards, soooo, that would mean anyone who stills plays classic could use this combo.

Just add vampiric embrace and vampiric link and it's a good one.
