how can we make this better. other than unwinding clock

Well the first things that comes to mind is sinking feeling. in this instance, it's almost even better than freed from the real since it will only use colorless mana. That's way better than unwinding clock too in this scenario.

enchant the steel overseer with the sinking feeling, have workhorse in play
tap the overseer to put a +1/+1 counter on all artifact creatures you control
remove a counter from workhorse to spend one mana in the feelings to untap the overseer
repeat
Any artifact creature you control besides the overseer and the workhorse will get infinite p/t
instead of sinking feeling also a combination of
and
or two workhorses with vigean graftmage will work, too
