essence warden and broodhatch nantuko out.
play the hellion, damage the nantuko.
the shaman gives your life back.

You can add Parallel Lives and/or Doubling Season for more tokens. Otherwise, yes, you can only make as many tokens as your current life total less one (i.e.: if you have 20 life, you can only make 19 tokens at one time; any more than that, and you'll lose the game immediately as soon as you hit 0 life).

I believe you may make as many tokens as you want. The wording for damage is:

When Volcano Hellion enters the battlefield, it deals an amount of damage of your choice to you and target creature. The damage can't be prevented.

Also, from Gatherer:

As Volcano Hellion's enters-the-battlefield ability resolves, you choose a number. Volcano Hellion deals that amount of damage to you and to the targeted creature. You may choose 0.

This means you can choose 1,234,567,890 if you wanted.

A friend of mine use a combo with Darien, king of Kjeldor and an Auriok champion.
He tells that no matters how many damages I'll do to him, he will remain alive and get the tokens.

So is he wrong?
Making more damage than his life points will kill him?

Yes you have to take all the damage then you get your token if his life ever hits zero he loses

having 0 life is a state-based action which beats out any triggered abilities. just dont choose a number equal to your life

You would only survive taking more damage than you have life if at the same time the damage was dealt you gained enough life to remain above 0. That's one improvement to lifelink, which use to be a triggered ability, but now is not. But with Darien or with the Nantuko, both contain that key word "whenever", meaning it's a triggered ability that goes on the stack in reaction to the damage. Like you heard, before any of those abilities get a chance to resolve (perhaps even hit the stack, I need to double check when State Based Effects trigger), State Based Effects will see that you are at or below 0 and the game will end.

it just needs needs phyrexian unlife, and you are set to go.


choose 1,000,000 damage and you 1) don't lose and 2) gain all the life back.
other things like angel's grace, platinum emperion, and platinum angel can also be used.

Phrexian unlife protects you because as long as you have life when you cast volcano hellion all the damage is dealt at once and as such does not have infect.

number to 0 or less. For example, if you're at 3 life and are dealt 5
damage, you'll end up at -2 life. The next time you're dealt damage, it
