if you have helm of awakening out and you play a card that costs X, such as blaze or any other out there...does that mean for whatever you payed X for it'd act as if you payed one more? since HoA allows you to play it for 1 generic less anyway...

no, helm only reduces the Absolute generic cost by 1, not a Variable cost.  Sorry :(

i asked this question myself about 16 years ago when i first started playing, and there still arent many ppl who know the answer, i had to ask a DCI Judge at PTQ's about it back during Urza's block.  Good question though, and thanks for asking :)

Hope my answer was helpful

The way it works is:

You announce you are playing Blaze and declare it's target and the value of X.

Since you have declared the value of X, the cost of the spell is calculated. e.g. if you pick 5 for X, the cost is 5R for Blaze.

You then apply anything which increases or decreases the cost. Helm of Awakening reduces the cost by 1.

You end up paying 4R, but Blaze still deals 5 damage.

(this is based on the current rules, which have changed since Urza's block)

601 is the part of the rules regarding playing a spell, 601.2b has you declare variables, and 601.2e specifically deals with calculating the cost

essentialy yes

The second part of casting a spell is to choose the amount for the variables, ie. choose what the value of X is, in this case lets say x=10

2 or 3 parts of the casting procedures later is when you pay the cost.  so the cost would be 10R, however due to the helm you would only pay 9R.  This does not change the value that was chosen for X in part 2, so you will still do 10 damage
