Wouldn't the mana empty when the combat phase ends?

No, after the combat phase, there's a second main phase and after this, the end step. At the end of this phase, your turn is out and your mana pool become empty.

spark is right.  Mana pools empty at the end of each phase or step.  So it will empty before your 2nd main phase.

500.4. When a step or phase ends, any unused mana left in a player’s mana pool empties. This turnbased action doesn’t use the stack.

Since gericault beat me to it here's the rule. 500.1 lists the phases which the combat phase is listed in.

So either it doesn't work as is (which sucks because it would have been nice to have options), or I need a card like Upwelling to make it work (but then it's not 'Red Relentlessness', it's some kind of dingy brown... or ugly yellow).

*le sigh* ...I'm starting to think I'm losing my edge.
