Braid of Fire's mana has to be used during upkeep which makes it mostly useless. With Gemstone Array you can store half of it each turn and use it anytime you want as mana of any color.

i might be missing something, but why can braid of fire's mana only be used during the upkeep?  i thought the mana was added to your mana pool and didn't empty til the end of your turn?  can u explain?

Mana empties at the end of each step and phase.

So, mana generated in your upkeep needs using in your upkeep, as it is emptied when you draw your card for the turn.

Even with mana burn this would still be a doable combo. You'd end up taking one point of damage every other turn. That's acceptable for the extra mana you would be putting in the bank.
