Cast Draining Whelk while you have Doubling Season out. Let's say they try to cast Blightsteel, do this combo in response and not only will you counter Blightsteel but you'll have a 25/25 flier to attack wiyh on the following turn. I know Blightsteel will go back into the deck, but they're not garunteed that the'll draw that SAME Blightsteel.

Blightsteel is more of an ideal scenario than anything else, besides, if I were playing Blightsteel, I prorbably wouldn't drop 12 mana on it when playing an opponent who is playing blue and has 6 mana available to them. Besides, this is no more a combo than Doubling Season and any other card that comes into play with counters.

There are other things you can counter - Skittles, Vatmother, Wormcoil Engine, or any Planeswalker.

That's a whole lot better. Let your opponent's resolve, which untaps your lands so you know that you'll have mana to pay for the Whelk, then counter your own 14 cmc spell. You don't even need doubling season now, its good as it is and that way its mono-colored.

interesting fact: there are only 14 legal cards that have a double digit in the casting cost.  Also gleemax and Mox Lotus

also there are only three cards with a converted mana cost more than 10 without a double digit.  Without looking it up can you name them?

A bit late to be posting to this one, but the Arabian Nights version of Aladdin's Lamp. There was no 10 cost icon at the time, so they used 2 5's.
