Due to a rule loophole, you can play serra avatar so long as it isn't your turn.

Leyline is perfect. I just wish there was a way to ramp to two mana on turn one in white other than moxes and lotuses.

Yes, but there are loopholes. The one here being that, the card only prevents you from playing it on YOUR first, second, or third turns but allows you to play it during your opponent's early turns (through leyline of anticipation or vedalken orrery).

The other loophole is working around the work "play", which is now "cast". If you play it without casting it, through cards like aether vial or elvish piper, then you can get it into play during the first few turns.

I have to say it's a weird wording.  I've found that looking for loopholes usually means you're trying to break the rules (not saying that in a bad way either as sometimes we need to bend the rules because that's what the cards do by the rules themselves).

The thing is that the card's text make the rules in this game and sometimes that's all about perception and people want to perceive their trick working and it takes someone in the rules area to set us straight.

What this shouldn't do is stop us from continuing to find the loopholes and cool card configuations.  What it shouldn't do is cause us to obsess over something that will be based on a judge saying, "it doesn't work" because trust me, in a tournament you don't want to hear someone say that!  I've had it happen and it ruined a deck that had the potential to win the tournament and it was because they changed the rule the day before.

@ the captain,

you are correct, the errata for Serra Avenger

You can't cast Serra Avenger during your first, second, or third turns of the game.

Flying, vigilance

Illus. Scott M. Fischer
Gatherer Card Rulings?, Legality?
9/25/2006: You can cast Serra Avenger during another player's first, second, or third turns of the game if some other effect (such as Vedalken Orrery) enables that.
9/25/2006: In cases where a player takes an extra turn, Serra Avenger keeps track of how many turns you've had, not how many turns the game has had.
so yes... you can play it on your opponents first turn if you tinker with things... but not on your first, second or third turns
