Pretty simple, Aether Vial turn one, turn two choose not to put a counter on the Vial, play Coretapper, sac to put two counters on Vial, then play Serra Avenger. Since it says "you can't cast Serra Avenger" during your first few turns, this should work I think since you're not casting it, you're putting it in play through an ability.

Nope, it says play, not cast.

I think that's going to prevent it from doing anything before its time comes.

The card says play, but its been updated to cast on gatherer. I thought that those words have been more or less considered to be interchangeable right? Isn't cast the new word that replaces instances of play on older cards?

I'm with The Cap on this one. I thought play = cast which only stopped it entering from the hand. Anything that put it into play from another source was legal on any turn. Piper it, entomb/animate dead it, Use the vial. ETC. Heck you could drop it with show and tell or tooth and nail also.

Here's the errata text; source magiccards.info:

You can't cast Serra Avenger during your first, second, or third turns of the game.

An interesting side note, you can still cast it on someone else's turn.

9/25/2006: You can cast Serra Avenger during another player's first, second, or third turns of the game if some other effect (such as Vedalken Orrery) enables that.

Also, with a dark rit, you could do this on 1st turn. Though that 4 cards for only a 3/3.

@ Darth

Play is the same thing as cast. The people above me are right.
