Just another old school combo that wasn't in the database.  It's very old school because Berserk never made it past Unlimited.

When Lotus and Moxes (even restricted) were around this was a first turn kill, but even without doing it on first turn a trample 20/1 is no laughing matter, especially back then.

I remember this being the target of a first turn unsummon and a second turn counterspell. (If you played blue and went first).

I saw this get blocked by 19 thrull 0/1s and the guy dealing out the damage says, I'll send it all into that 0/1 and trampled over for the kill, lol.

correct me if I'm wrong, but I do not believe you can do that. rule 702.17b states that: The controller of an attacking creature with trample first assigns damage to the creature(s) blocking it. Once all those blocking creatures are assigned lethal damage, any remaining damage is assigned as its controller chooses among those blocking creatures and the player or planeswalker the creature is attacking.

The rule states that ALL creatures must be dealt lethal damage before trample damage can be done. This question came up in my Borborygmos EDH deck. I thought it was the other way, but was duely corrected.

I seem to remember back in the day the rule was played how Darth relates it and it was changed sometime between then and now...

You are correct.

As you know, the attacker assigns damage to the blockers.
Trample wasn't very clear and an initial rules call was made that Trample was assigned to blockers whichever way the attacker wanted and what was left-over went to the controller.  So someone blocked with a bunch of creatures and since he was able to assign damage he just assigned it all (which effectively you can do) to the smallest creature.  Since the rules stated everything over lethal goes to the controller he beat his opponent and the rules call became a precedence, but I don't think that is the way the creators had imagined it.

Personally I think the new rule weakened Trample greatly as an ability, but I understand that whiners usually win.

Dang wish I had been around back then. :S that rule royaly screwed the initial strategies I had with Borborygmos. Glad to have everything clarified, though.

Hum... this look kinda of a foolish question, but what happens if a Blightsteel Colossus attacks and a Darksteel Myr blocks it?

In the new rules, all the damage goes into the one of the attackers choice

In the old rules, all the damage goes into either divided as the attacker chooses, but none of it makes it to the player.

Sorry to insist, but the curiosity is killing me! xP
So, the trample ability says:
702.17b The controller of an attacking creature with trample first assigns damage to the creature(s) blocking it. Once all those blocking creatures are assigned lethal damage, any remaining damage is assigned as its controller chooses among those blocking creatures and the player or planeswalker the creature is attacking...
So... if a Darksteel Colossus, other example, attacks and Darksteel Myr blocks, the Colossus will deal 1 damage to the myr, and the rest will go to the player/planeswalker even with the myr staying alive, right?

well, upon further reading (and I disaprove of this, oh well, new house rule time) the damage would be 1 to the myr the rest to the player. . .

Example: A 6/6 green creature with trample is blocked by a 2/2 creature
with protection from green. The attacking creature's controller must
assign at least 2 damage to the blocker, even though that damage will be
prevented by the blocker's protection ability. The attacking
creature's controller can divide the rest of the damage as he or she
chooses between the blocking creature and the defending player. [CompRules 2009/07/08]

this helps clear things up for me.

if thats the case... whats the point to the creature ability "banding"?

Banding was created to work with the old rules. That way, the player with the band could split up the damage so that none or few of his creatures die, and many of his opponent's creatures died. With the new rules, damage can't be split up like that, so bands are much less good.

Your wrong hungry, when dealing with bands, it uses the old rules for assigning combat damage.

Banding isn't very effective in regards to Trample anyway.
