Would that be considered "cast"?  I think it would apply more to an activation ability because it says "play" instead of cast, but the other card doesn't say, "cast from your hand" so I don't know why it wouldn't work.

Cast is the same as play.

Current oracle wording for Isochron Scepter:

Imprint - When Isochron Scepter enters the battlefield, you may exile an instant card with converted mana cost 2 or less from your hand.

{2}, {T}: You may copy the exiled card. If you do, you may cast the copy without paying its mana cost.

Whether the spell is countered or not, you will get to draw at least 6 from the Sphinx's trigger for each opponent your playing against.  Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind anyone?
