I realize this isn't the strongest combo, nor is it useful in many situations, but i figure if you are playing a 4 player game, it might be nice to be able to counter at least one of your opponent's spells on each of their turns.

 I see no point. Instead of foil and thwart, can't you use Cancel? it's worse than counterspell but it is better than foil and thwart.

I think Dakkon Thued refers Foil and Thwart due to the possibility to use no mana with them. In his logic, you can cast 4 counters with 4 manas, 2 discards and 3 returns. I my opinion, a better possibility for this is exchange Foil and Thwart for 2 Force of Will: 4 manas, 2 removes and 2 life. Unless the two discards have madness.

its four in one turn, not per turn.

yeah, you're right it's only one turn, and yes 2 force of wills would be better, but believe it or not, i don't have a shit-ton of them lying around.  like i said, it's not that useful, so thanks for imput?
