The downside of Lich is that when you take damage you must sacrifice permanents. Delaying shield prevents all damage to you and converts it all into _loss of life_. Lich makes it ok to have less than 0 life so there's no harm done. Ideally you would also use Sterling Grove to protect your Lich and a Words of Worship to draw stupid amounts of cards.

How about Glacial Chasam instead of Delaying Shield? Are you allowed to pay life if you're at 0?
