Inviolability is very important. Death Pits will throw anything into the graveyard that takes damage. Inviolability prevents the Baron from taking damage, thus ensuring that he will not be forced into the graveyard.
Death Pits of Rath ensures that anything the Baron does damage to is destroyed - instilling the +2/+2 buff. Lure is an effective way of eliminating a large number of your opponent's creatures, all the while making Baron Sengir an absolute powerhouse.

This combo no longer works as well as you would like it to. Since M10 rules came in, you can no longer divide up damage as you choose between defending creatures unless the attacker has deathtouch. You can still kill multiple creatures, but you have to deal damage to each at least equal to their toughness.
