Not fast enough. 8 mana for 3 life a turn is far to slow. On him it is more for the fact that if he doesn't swing you get 3. If he does it is 9 life lost per turn. 9 damage form a critter for 8 mana is good. 3 life for 8 mana is poor.

i usually have 4 of each card, not always though. in a life gaining deck this is good especially if you have more than one sphinx out

2 9 cost creatures. And not a sure win con? Why not just Emrakul then? This isn't really a "winning" combo. It might be fun though.

If you gave the sphinx lifelink then that would work. 12 life gain per turn and they lose 6 or you get 6 and keep them safe. That is a good combo.
