With Forsaken Wastes players cannot gain life and each player loses 1 life each upkeep.
Transcendence prevents you from losing if you have 0 or less life but has a nasty catch: if you reach 20 or more life you lose the game and you gain 2 life for each life you lose. It's always safer to have a couple out just in case one gets popped.
Forsaken Wastes prevents this life gain and also has a built in self defence of smacking somebody for 5 if they successfully hit it with a spell. Laying down a few of them speeds up the damage and discourages casting spells at them.
The Sterling Grove keeps your enchantments safe so is just added security but not necessary.
Having a few counterspells in your hand doesn't hurt either...

Forsaken Wastes is good but note the target clause. A global enchantment killer won't trigger the 5 life loss because it doesn't target Forsaken Wastes.

good combos... cant forget to add necropotence in there too, and a disenchant or 2 for a failsafe
