Get phytohydra or sprouting phytohydra in play and equipped with Pariah's Shield

Get Pestilence or Pyrohemia in play

Spam pestilence or Pyrohemia with all the mana you can muster

In no time you'll have a huge creature and little to no opposition

Photohydra still has to survive the initial first point of damage for him to gain counters doesn't he.

Maybe that's the errata, but when I read it it sounded like the damage is prevented and instead that many +1/+1 counters are put on it. Well, if anyone knows the official ruling on this I'd love to hear it.

Keep in mind that both Pestilence and pyrohemia do their damage incrementally, it's treated as a new instance of damage each time you pay for it, so even if you had to make it a 2/2 to survive the first blast, after that the +1/+1 counters cover the rest of the damage no matter how you interpret the rules.

You are correct in your reading Jade, once the hydra hits the field no amount of damage will destroy it, even the first one due to its replacement effect.

Once Pariah is on, I would look at giving the hydra shroud to protect it , or since it is already white maybe make it indestructable, though removal or self sac effects would still affect it.  Also Shivan meteor and souls fire to itself would be fun

I think it's damage first before counters, so you need to pump him up with a giant growth or something...

In cases, such as with rite of passage or fungus silver for example, you are right Shakii.  however, Phytohydra uses a replacement effect, damage is replaced with +1 counters, as stated by the word instead.

It works like wither only in reverse

Oh yeah, it says put that many +1/+1 instead... So it is prevented... Instead of the damage, it gets +1/+1.. Cool...
