Play crypt rats and enchant with training grounds. This will make it's ability cost 2 less to play. Only spend "2" mana on it's damage ability, that way it won't cost anything. Do this an infinite amount of times and deal 2•Infinity damage. You will win winner.

That wouldn't work...spend only black mana the rat says while training ground says up to two colorless less.

maybe, but the cost is a colorless X. In conclusion, it's cost is colorless, but it needs to be payed with black mana.

That wouldnt work because unless you pay mana for X it is considered 0 and you can't make 0 cost 2 less to activate...

Exactly, X is always colorless

Playing a spell or ability requires 8 steps, So I am going through the steps breaking down how this works

1)  Announce your intent to play the spell or ability

2)  Choose the modes, alternate costs (kicker, buyback, etc..), At this point you will choose the value for X.  So for example in this combo we will say X is 3

3) Choose targets if necessary

4) if end effects are distributed  (fireball for example) choose how distributed

5) determine total cost of the spell or ability, this is adding in the cmc and any additional costs like buyback and then minus any cost reducers.  So it is at this point the training grounds reduction is applied. So if x=3 then 3 - 2 (the training grounds reduction) = a cost of 1.

6) Use mana abilities

7) Pay the costs in full.  At this point, crypt rats puts out a restriction that the cost has to be paid in black mana.  Since we determined in step 5 the cost is 1, 1 B has to be paid

8) once all the above has been done the spell or ability has be cast and goes to the stack, any cast a spell abilitys go to the stack at this point as well above the orignal spell.

So once the crypt rats ability resolves it will do 3 damage to all, since it does X damage and 3 was the number determined for X is step 2.  The cost paid is ilrelevent

Is there a rule citation that shows that this combo would work?

The fact of the matter is that training grounds can't reduce the cost below one. This isn't an infinite combo. The most you can do is triplicate the damage you would be putting on the stack. Instead of dealing 7 damage you could do up to 21 damage.

I don't see how the other combo is an edited version. It is entirely different. The only similarity is Training Grounds.

Well the edit also uses the same "deal infinite damage" idea.
