how about using the creature with bazar trader, and ice cage.
red at least gives you a way to mana ramp and donate the creature. Ice cage while not the best gives you the same effect you where looking for, and cuts this to two colors (not three).
Blue/Red has become very powerful over the past few years as well. Mixing aggro (a weak control) with manipulation (a stronger control) you get a great fast mix.
