On their turn they are active play though.

Couldn't they put the return creature on the stack first and then the bottomless pit second?

This would allow them to discard first then return the creature second.

Good point, bottomless pit would have to be the choice for this combo (because it activates during upkeep rather than at the beginning of upkeep).

You get to choose triggers, plus during upkeep doesn't exist anymore. Check the oracle text.

Turbines right as the owner of the source you control the abilities so you can choose the order they resolve, though personally I would use Warped devotion instead of the pit, not as mana intensive since your playing 3 colors and gives you control so you control so you can repeatly drop the rootwalla
