why wouldn't you just equip the mantle and not the other thing so they take 4 damage instead and you should pay the kicker so they take 7 damage instead.

Like what your attempting, however, clinging darkness prevents it from happening.
The unkicked aether is 1/1, mantle makes it a 4/4, however darkness then makes it a 0/3, since it has no power it does no damage so mantle won't trigger
