You have to use the spawn made from last upkeep as fodder for the moument. Otherwise, the creature isn't there to sac until the middle of the upkeep. By that time, the monument's ability would have already resolved.

actually, since both trigger simultaneously, as the player with priority, you choose which goes on the stack first, and which goes last.  so put monument on stack, then the zone.  token is made, then you may sac it.

There is nothing to clear up jmd is correct.
Though it has nothing to do with priority if you want to get technical. Just a result of you being the active player and you getting to stack the triggers how you want priotity is not even given to any playe3r until these abilities are on the stack
