Use Ovinomancer's tap ability before it's enter-battlefield trigger resolves and you won't have to pay it.

I'm not sure if it will work, but it will be great if it does.

no it does not work

when you play it the come into play ability goes on stack giving you a chance to tap ovinimancer if it has haste which then stacks to return to hand and then you get down to the comes into play ability on the stack

If I'm not mistaken, the ability fizzles because you are forced to sacrifice it (but can't because it is no longer in play). You can pay the alternative cost to replace the sacrifice effect, but there is no need to. If the card had said "sacrifice this or return three basic lands" it would be a different story.

This works.

Actually, as I think about it, I believe it doesn't work.

Alternate example: Oblivion Ring and Vedalken Mastermind. Even though the Ring was returned to your hand, it still targets the non-land permanent.

This works fine, here's the breakdown

play the ovinmancer its come into play ability goes on the stack, before it resolves tap the ovinmance due to haste and return the ovinmancer to hand as part of the cost,  then destroy target creature, after that the comes into play ability resolves asking you if you want to sac the ovinomancer or return 3 basic lands to you hand.  choose not to return the lands, so the ability says sac the ovinomancer which is not in play so the ability does nothing since there is nothing to sac
