With life-link, damage and life-gain are simultaneous (it's a static effect rather than a trigger).

But even if I'm wrong, the worst case scenario is just to keep an odd amount of life.

you would lose the life, then gain it, in the order of the abilities resolving (tap to deal damage, lifelink then resolves next.)

Lifelink is a static ability. That means it doesn't use the stack. As the creature with lifelink deals damage you gain life. Because of that you can't kill yourself with damage from a creature you control that has lifelink.
