But isn't the target of a spell chosen upon casting (rather than before resolution)?

I can't say I'm convinced this combo would work.

Oh how i wish it did, when you look at the gnomes they seem awsome heres a card that can get around all colored protections, unfortunatly you are right, you choose targets when casting the spell so you can't target a spell that has protection from ?,  the opportunity to make it colorless occurs after the targeting

yup, thats correct.

the gnomes were basically made as a way around Circle of Protections, and other cards like that.
