use cauldron of souls to give woolly thoctar presist then sac him with ashnods altar. put the two +1/+1 counters on wooly thoctar removing the -1/-1 then repeat. for an infinint infinint an infinint mana

Wouldn't the thoctor come back into play as a 4/3, therefore never get the 2  +1+1 counters?

you need gaea's anthem  and its better to use a creature with persist when woolly goes to graveyard when it comes back it will no longer have persist read the rules for the Cauldron

yes but it will only have persist once unless he can untap the cauldron

would the actual creatures with persist be better?
