Just use any card that pumps its toughness by 1 or more. Spider umbra is cheap, anthems are better.

Spike Cannibal is better than the hexmage. It leaves you with a big creature, as opposed to no creature. Not as good a fate transfer, but an option none the less.

I meant the hexmage vs the spike. The hexmage dies to use it's ability. The spike doesn't. That means that the removal is the same, with the same bigger hydra. The difference is no hexmage at the end vs a big spike.
