Just what it says. The training grounds isn\'t necessary, but it takes having 7 down before it is infinite without it, as opposed to 3.

With the training ground down it cost 2 each use. 1 to play a prism, and 1 blue to untap. With the second hits the field, he makes 2 form the echos. That is the point of infinite mana. Without it it takes 6 on the field. The grounds make it easy to pull off. Without it, the combo becomes a long shot.

that is what i thought you were doing.  training grounds doesn't work on the diamond as its not a creature you still pay 3, need the march

Even without that. pay 3 get 1 and 1 mana. pay 1U untap, and pay 2 (3-1), get +1 prisim and 2 mana. When all is said and done, you need blue mana to grow the number of prisms in play, but you reach critical mass at your 3rd one. Total cost is 3U and 6. 9 Mana total, which can be spaced out somewhat to get all you need. The power artifact makes it 1, but it is still workable without (only just barely though).

Then why was it in the original combo?

To make it realistic to get it in a game. Without the training grounds the combo takes having a ton of prism before it reaches critical mass. With it it can be done in just 1 or 2 turns.

You can just use Something like Ant Queen... instead of diamond prism... and something like maybe phyrexian altar or ashnod's altar... your choice...

Phyrexian Altar would be necessary.
